Career Guidance Series : Software Development

Welcome ! welcome ! Hope I find you well !

Hey everybody this is Ibrahim Chilanga founder of E-Blue Institute. I am the author of a free course titled O-Level Maths Simplified. If you haven’t registered for this amazing course yet please click here to do so.

I  help ordinary level students pass mathematics and other o-level subjects like Accounting, Science, Commerce, English, History etc by going out of my way and by being creative in my teaching the aim being to see doors of opportunity and career advancement being opened for my students.

O-level students are young adolescents and lots of guidance is critical for them. One other area they need guidance is career guidance. Career guidance is important to O level students because if you help them see were they are going it will motivate them to be serious with their studies today.

To this end as their teacher I have put together this series called Career Guidance Series that detail certain top or high income jobs in the local and international market, how to train for these and other relevant information.

In this inaugural article we will look at Software Development a possible career choice for those good in mathematics and sciences.

With the increase in demand for Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions software development has risen to the top of the best jobs locally and internationally.

To get started let me first answer an important question – How do you determine that a job is a high income job ? Everyone want a job that pays well and help them live a comfortable life. Right ? But how can one determine or know that this job is the one ?

Well the answer is that its all about supply and demand. Every job require certain skills to be done. So a high income job is identified by high income skills that are needed as minimum qualifications for the job. So to get a high income job you must identify a high income skill. Now the question becomes how do you identify a high income skill ?

A high income skill is determined by high demand and low supply. This means that this is a skill that a few people have so as a result many people are willing to pay more for it. Software development, digital marketing, medical practice, financial advisory services are good examples.

The opposite to a high income skill is called an average wage income skill. An average wage income skill is a skill many people have so people are willing to pay little money for it. Bus driver, till operator, brick laying etc are examples of average wage income skills and jobs.

To live a financially comfortable life you must aspire for high income skills because they will help you secure a high income job like software development.

In the Career Guidance Series I help you identify high income jobs by giving you examples of what is trending. So lets talk about software development an on demand high income skill.

Software Development

Do you love creating things? Does the idea of Artificial Intelligence (AI) changing and improving our lives fascinate you? Would you like a job that requires you to constantly evolve and learn?

If the answer is yes, then you should point your feet in the direction of software development so you can learn more about topics like cloud computing.

Software applies to all industries, not just IT, technology and gaming. There is business analysis, marketing, and medicine. In our modern world, it’s difficult to find an industry that software development has not touched!

What is software development ?

Software development is designing and coding background software to support application development. You would need to learn computer languages such as C, C++, Ruby, Python, and Java.

What you would do on the job ?

Depending on your specific role, you might:

  • Supervise and coordinate the building and maintenance of new computer systems.
  • Set up intranets.
  • Install and configure computer systems.
  • Coordinate network security.
  • Develop new computer systems and software
How you would train for this work ?
  • Get a bachelor’s degree in software engineering, computer science, or similar field.
  • Focus on software-building classes and similar courses and learn to write code and program computers.
  • Learn about the industry you will be employed in (such as understanding finance if you will be a software engineer at a bank).
  • Continually learn, to keep up with the rapid pace of technological evolution.
